The answer to that, like many things when you’re considering physical activity, is not going to be as cut and dried as you’d like. It will be difficult to answer with any definitive number.
Everyone is different and every body is different. You can’t take the workout of a 5’0” tall woman who is more focused on cardio exercise and compare it, pound for pound, with a 6’2” man who is working with free weights constantly.

When you calculate the number of calories you are burning during any workout, it helps you become as efficient as possible.
Some people might go for a brisk walk and, after an hour, burn less than 100 calories.
If their ideal caloric consumption per day is 1,800 and they consume 2,000 and they’re only burning about 100 extra calories during a walk for one hour, they won’t be losing weight.

However, someone using the P90X workout routine, who is putting several components together for that one-hour routine, they could burn anywhere from 300 to 900 calories. Maybe even more!
Not to be rude, but the more overweight a person is, the more calories he or she will burn when exercising, even just going for a brisk walk. That’s because they’re already dragging along with them more weight than someone else their height who does the same type of activity.
Yet, at the same time, you need to consider a reasonable starting point. If you are just beginning to workout again after many years, or this is the first time ever for your conditioning, you need to go slow.
Don’t try running a marathon. First, go for a casual walk. Then, as your body becomes accustomed to the exercise, it’ll be easier for you to build up more minutes, more miles, or more weight.

Why the discrepancy?
Different workouts are going to target different muscle groups. Those exercises that focus on only a couple of muscle groups are simply not going to be burning as many calories as exercises that focus on the entire body.
It’s not just about which muscle groups that get targeted, either. It’s also about how intense you work out those muscles.
Yoga, while challenging, isn’t doing much to burn calories. In fact, the Yoga X workout for a 195 pound person at high intensity will only return a 300 calorie burn in 45 minutes.
When calculating in your intensity levels, you need to think about how you might be able to function while in the midst of a workout.
Frankly speaking, if you can carry on a conversation or even sing a song while doing any of these exercises, then your intensity level of considered ‘low’.
If, however, you’re having a conversation, albeit with heavy breathing, then you might be able to move your intensity level up to the mid-range.
On the other hand, if you are completely out of breath and talking is the last thing in the world you could possibly think about doing, then you were working out with some high intensity.
Going back to our previous example, at 195 pounds, working out with Plyometrics for 45 minutes, and going at high intensity, that’s about 717 calories burned.
If you decide to take it easy and only go for a low intensity workout, then you’re burning about 439 calories. Mid intensity would grant you 571 calories burned.
